Surprise!

All week, I have known that this Shabbat, Shmulik would be on base. He has a doctor’s appointment on Sunday to check out his headaches and decide how he will continue in the army. He asked his commanding officer if he could come home for Shabbat and leave for the medical appointment from here. It would take him 3 hours to travel from the base, a bit over an hour from home.

Friday morning, as I was preparing for the Sabbath here, Shmulik called. He was on the bus coming home! It was funny. We had my husband’s cousin coming; a friend had called and asked if he could come and bring a friend. My daughter and son-in-law were coming…the numbers were fluctuating like crazy. 7, 8, 10, 12…

It was fine…it was great. That is the essence of the Sabbath here – sharing it with others and enjoying the day.

  1. Shabbat is always so much more enjoyable when you have a full house, a table groaning with family, guests and great conversation. Even the zmirot sound so much more melodious!
