EasyJet’s Moment of Silence

On Thursday’s flight from Luton, England to Tel Aviv, the pilot came on the intercom and informed the passengers that the crew will be observing a minute of silence as they fly over Munich and he invited the passengers to join them in remembering the Israeli sportsmen who were murdered there at the Olympic Games 40 years ago.

Such a simple act. Kol HaKavod (All honor) to that pilot and crew who showed a greater sense of humanity in those 60 seconds than the International Olympics Committee has in forty years.

  1. Brachot to the pilot and to any and every member of the crew and the passenger list who sided with Good in his or her heart by choosing to participate fully in that moment of silence. May each of these choices — to include your acknowledgment and gratitude — hasten the Geula Shelaima.

  2. Hi Anonymous – No, I have yet to see confirmation (or denial) from media sources. Then again, according to most of the media (New York Times, CNN), the incident in which the Lebanese Judo team refused to train while they could see Israeli athletes didn’t happen either (despite pictures in other media showing the Olympics workers erecting the barrier). So no, I can’t confirm – but I would think that days later easyJet would have denied this report if it wasn’t true and certainly no one has stepped forth (as far as I know)to say it didn’t happen. I know the Italian athletes paid tribute with a moment outside the Israeli residence. I hope this happened too. It was a beautiful gesture at a time when so few are being made.

  3. I personally do not know what happened. However I’m inclined to believe the Easyjet story cos I found this at the USA stands with Israel facebook page:

Dear family and friends. Our article about an Easyjet pilot and crew observing a minute silence as they flew over Munich has stirred up an amazing amount of comments. Some people, however, doubted that it ever happened. So here is a comment from our good friend Richard Elton, who was actually on that flight. This is an exact copy of his words. Thank you, Richard.

“I CAN CONFIRM THAT I WAS ON THE EASYJET FLIGHT FROM LUTON TO TEL AVIV ON FRIDAY 27th JULY. AT 10:40 AS WE PASSED OVER MUNICH THE PILOT ANNOUNCED WHERE WE WERE AND SPOKE FOR A MOMENT ABOUT THE TRAGEDY. HE ALSO INVITED PEOPLE TO JOIN IN WITH A MINUTE SILENCE AT 11am WHICH WAS WELL OBSERVED. KOL HAKOVOD EASYJET.”
